The department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at BMH provides surgical solutions to conditions related to heart, lung, and blood vessels. Comprehensive Cardiothoracic & Vascular (CTVS) Surgery is offered at BMH Heart Centre that involves the treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the chest (heart, lungs & major blood vessels). The centre aims at giving excellent surgical care while minimizing the pain, cost and inconvenience for the patients thereby completely restoring their health and well‐being. A wide range of complex heart problems are managed with advanced surgical care, with the help of full‐fledged cardiac OT suites equipped with latest technologies. Giving importance to patient’s comfort, the operation theatres and other facilities are arranged in a patient‐friendly manner. The advanced CTVS ICU is well‐equipped to offer 24‐hour pre and post‐operative care for critically ill patients. The panel of doctors at the surgery department consists of well‐qualified experienced surgeons to assure perfect care during and after the surgical treatments. IABP (Intra‐Aortic Balloon Pump) and ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) are used to support the lives of critically ill patients with respiratory and/or heart failures. The procedure requires skilled professionals and the assistance of latest technologies, which BMH assures to the patients.

Dr. Harilal, Chief of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, has more than 20 years of vast experience in the field. He has training and experience in paediatric and adult cardiac surgeries which include complex congenital cardiac surgeries, beating heart CABG, LV Aneurysm repairs, Aortic arch repairs and cardiac transplants. Also, he has extensive experience in various complex valve repairs, valve replacements and LV assist devices. His current areas of interest are Beating heart CABG with Endoscopic vessel harvesting, Valve repairs and Video assisted Thoracoscopy (VATS), Pediatric Cardiac surgery, Major Aortic and Peripheral Vascular surgery and Myesthenia Gravis (Thymectomy) surgeries.
Qualification
- Dr. Harilal is a graduate of Government Medical College Kottayam (1989), He obtained Postgraduate Degree in General Surgery from Government Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai (1994) and subsequently he completed MCh in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery from Government Medical College, Calicut (1997).
Work Experience
- Dr. Harilal joined in BMH in March 2013 as Senior Consultant in the Department of CTVS. Previously, he was the Director and Chief Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon in Lakshmi Institute of Heart and Lung Surgery from February 2010 to February 2013. Prior to that, he was the Chief CT surgeon at the Silver oaks Superspecialty hospital in Chandigarh from 2008 to 2010. He was the Medical Director and Head of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgery team, right from the time of inception, at KMCH Speciality Hospital, Erode, Tamilnadu.
- He worked as a teaching faculty and consultant in various institutions. After obtaining his MCH degree, he worked as an Assistant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at KMCH Coimbatore till 2000. He joined the prestigious Sri Ramachandra Medical Center, Chennai as an Assistant professor in the department of CTVS under Prof. K. R. Balakrishnan and worked there till 2004. He joined back in KMCH Coimbatore as Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in 2004.
- In his career, he has performed independently more than 3000 major Cardiac Operations, compromising of Beating Heart CABG, Valve repairs and replacements, and complex pediatric cardiac surgeries. He has performed more than 1000 General Thoracic Surgeries which includes Lobectomy, Pneumonectomy, Thoracoplasty, Mediastinal tumors, Diaphragmatic and Oesophageal operations. He got extensive experience of more than 5000 Bronchoscopies, Oesophagoscopies (FOB & RIGID), Mediastinoscopies, and Thoracoscopies. He also has competence in handling various vascular procedures like Aortic aneurysm repair, carotid endarterectomy, and Aorto-Bi femoral surgeries.
